Herbicides as Ripeners for Sugarcane
نویسندگان
چکیده
Chemical ripening of sugarcane is an important component to profitable sugar production in the United States as well as other sugarcane industries throughout the world. Harvesting of sugarcane often begins before the sugarcane reaches the desirable maturity level. This is especially true in the Louisiana sugarcane industry where the window for harvesting is limited because of the risk of freezing temperatures encountered in a temperate climate. Research on the application of chemicals, mostly of herbicide origin, to enhance sucrose accumulation (ripening) or limit flowering to conserve stored sucrose has been conducted for more than 60 yr. The only sugarcane ripener currently registered for use in the United States is glyphosate applied before harvest. The herbicide fluazifop is used as the primary ripener of sugarcane in South Africa. The herbicides glyphosate, fluazifop, and sulfometuron-methyl and the growth regulators ethephon and trinexapacethyl are registered for use in Brazil. There is a continuing need to evaluate sugarcane ripeners to increase the utility of currently registered ripeners and to find additional ripeners for use by sugarcane industries. The need for alternatives to glyphosate is especially critical before a glyphosate-tolerant sugarcane can be utilized to improve control of problematic weeds. Nomenclature: Ethephon; fluazifop; glyphosate; sulfometuron-methyl; trinexapac-ethyl; sugarcane, Saccharum interspecific hybrid.

The Performance of Sugarcane Varieties N23 and N25 on Low Yield Potential Soils in Swaziland
South African sugarcane varieties N23 and N25 were compared against industry standards NCo376 and N19 on soils with low yield potential in four replicated, irrigated trials comprising a total of 17 crops, harvested either early, mid or late in the milling season. Chemical ripeners ethephon (2-chloroethanephosphonic acid) and Fusilade Super (fluazifop-p-butyl) were applied either alone or as a c...

Cultivation of sugarcane for bioethanol is increasing and the area under sugarcane is expanding. Much of the sugar for bioethanol comes from large plantations where it is grown with relatively high inputs. Sugarcane puts a high demands on the soil because of the use of heavy machinery and because large amounts of nutrients are removed with the harvest; biocides and inorganic fertilizers introdu...
متن کاملCrop Growth Models for Decision Support in the South African Sugarcane Industry
The objectives of this paper are to present progress in crop growth modelling for decision support in the South African sugarcane industry, and to discuss possible directions towards better exploitation of the tools developed at SASRI. It is shown that their dynamic nature and process orientation make simulation models particularly useful as a basis for decision support systems (DSS) in crop ma...
